Venita Akpofure has publicly apologized to the Tiv tribe for the derogatory comments she made about their culture on the Big Brother Naija show.
Recall that Ms. Akpofure, during her appearance on the show, claimed that Tiv men give their wives as gifts to visitors, a comment that has since attracted a N10 billion lawsuit.
Venita, who was onec married into one of the influential Tiv families and had two children, told housemates and I quote;
“In the Tiv tribe, they give wives to guests.”
This comment caused outrage on social media and led to a petition calling for her to leave BBNaija.
Akpofure was evicted on Sunday along with Soma and Angel for getting the least votes. In a recent interview with Hero Daniels, the reality TV star said that her comments about Tiv people were misinterpreted.
She explained that her daughters were Tiv and she would never make slanderous comments about their tribe.
She also admitted to being "careless" in her statement and apologized to those she offended.
“My statement about Tiv has been distorted a bit. My daughters are Tiv. I would never try to make malicious or slanderous comments against their people,” she said.
“In fact, during my season, we did an entire play around the Tor Tiv coronation that I was in and I was so excited.
“So, you know, sometimes you say something, maybe a little carelessly. And I think that's been misunderstood. And to those offended by it, I'm sorry" she added.
