President Bola Tinubu will announce a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers next week.
The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Festus Osifo, disclosed this while discussing the outcome of the union's Tuesday meeting with the Federal Government on the removal of fuel subsidy.
Nigerian Politics recalls that the TUC had given the federal government a two-week ultimatum to meet its demands or risk industrial action by workers across the country.
Speaking on ChannelsTV's Politics Today program on Tuesday evening, Osifo noted that the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, had told them that he had met with President Tinubu and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
Osifo said Lalong had told the union that the wage issue had been looked into, adding that Chairman Tinubu would speak on the matter in the coming days. “The Minister of Labor told us that he had a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and looked into the issue of salary allocation. But the president asked them to improve matters before making this announcement,” the TUC president said. “The minister told us that all these matters will be sorted out but since the president has gone on a business trip, we should give him two more weeks. We said no; We don't have two more weeks left to give. After further discussion, he said the president will make an appropriate announcement next week.
Osifo noted that the union has been coordinating with the Federal Government on palliative measures for the states. “We will monitor the allocation of palliative care in the states to ensure the program is implemented appropriately. We want to see the implementation model, which is why we have consulted with the federal government on this issue. We also raised questions regarding taxation and CNG (compressed natural gas),” the TUC president added.
