David and Ekweremadu

It is no longer news that one of  Nigeria's powerful politician, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice and their doctor have been thrown into prison over failed attempt to harvest the organ of a vulnerable Nigerin citizen, David Nwamini whom they deceived and took to the UK.

The sentencing follows their conviction in March when they were found guilty of flying in a man with the intention to use his kidney for their sick daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu.

A judge at The Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey on Friday, handed Ekweremadu nine years and eight months, his wife Beatrice was given f
4-years and six months imprisonment while Obeta received a maximum of 10-year prison term. The judge explained that the being a man of good character made his sentence less.

While both parents where sentenced their sick daughter, Sonia, was cleared of any wrongdoing.

The three were found guilty after arranging or facilitating a young Nigerian man’s travel into the United Kingdom in a bid to obtain his kidney on behalf of Sonia.

The jury said Ekweremadu, his wife and their doctor criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney.

The conviction is the first under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.

Shortly after the verdict was read, the supposed kidney donor, David Nwamini told the court he was scared to return back into the country as he could be killed.

According to David, he was approached with an opportunity to work in the UK, which he had always dreamed of but never thought would happen.

“He (Dr Obina Obeta) did not tell me he brought me here for this reason. He did not tell me anything about this.

“I would have not agreed to any of this. My body is not for sale.

“I worry for my safety in Nigeria. Those people can do anything. I think they could arrest me or kill me in Nigeria.

“My plan now is to work and to get an education and to play football,” David said, adding that he does not want to claim compensation from the “bad people” as it would be “cursed and bad luck”.

He also said someone visited his father in Nigeria and asked the father to get him to drop the case.

Reacting to the verdict was the senator's sick daughter Sonia who said;

"I feel guilty that all this happened to my parents because of me".
